About Us

SM Charitable Society was formed in 2009 by Dr. Farhat Khan (MBBS, MS) Gen. Surgeon in loving memory of  his Late Father Janab Shafique Khan. SM here stands for Shafique Memorial. The society was formed with the objective of "Helping Hand For Poor And Downtrodden" with the main purpose of giving back a healthy and educated society.
In the early days the main focus area of the trust was to provide better medical infrastructure to the deprived ones. At SM Charitable Trust, we are dedicated to serving humanity by providing free treatment to poor, needy, or nomadic patients. Our mission is to make healthcare accessible to those who are often marginalized and underserved. Through our passionate team and innovative approach, we aim to make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most.

Sanitation

Key points about Unhygienic Sanitation in India:

  • Open defecation:

A major practice where people defecate in the open, contaminating the environment and spreading diseases.

  • Insufficient toilet access:

Many households lack access to proper toilets, especially in rural areas, forcing people to resort to open defecation.

  • Poor waste management:

Improper collection and disposal of solid waste leads to accumulation of garbage and breeding grounds for disease vectors.

  • Impact on health:

Unhygienic sanitation is directly linked to increased rates of diarrheal diseases, malnutrition, and other health complications, particularly among children.

  • Socioeconomic implications:

Lack of sanitation hinders economic development by impacting workforce productivity and education opportunities.

While government initiatives have been implemented to improve sanitation, significant challenges remain in ensuring equitable access to clean toilets and proper waste management across the country.

Nutritional Challenges in India

India faces a significant nutrition challenge, marked by a widespread prevalence of malnutrition, particularly among children, despite being a major food producer; this includes both undernutrition, due to inadequate access to nutritious food, and a growing concern of overnutrition in certain urban areas, creating a "double burden" of malnutrition; key factors contributing to this issue are poverty, limited awareness about balanced diets, poor sanitation, inadequate infant feeding practices, regional disparities in food availability, and a cropping pattern that often prioritizes staple grains over nutrient-rich crops, impacting the overall nutritional quality of diets across the country; addressing this challenge requires comprehensive interventions including targeted nutrition programs, improved access to healthcare, education campaigns promoting healthy eating habits, and policy changes to encourage diverse and nutrient-rich food production.

Challenges in Education system

Key points:

  • Unequal access:

Rural areas face major hurdles in accessing quality education due to lack of schools, qualified teachers, and basic amenities.

  • Outdated curriculum:

The emphasis on rote learning and outdated teaching methods hinders critical thinking and practical skill development.

  • Funding issues:

Insufficient government funding limits the ability to improve infrastructure and teacher training.

  • Gender disparity:

Girls are significantly less likely to attend school compared to boys, particularly in rural areas.

  • Teacher shortage:

A lack of qualified teachers, especially in rural areas, impacts the quality of education delivered.

Challenging Health Conditions in India

India faces significant health challenges, primarily characterized by a high burden of both communicable diseases like tuberculosis and malaria, alongside a growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer; further aggravated by widespread malnutrition, particularly among children, due to inadequate access to nutritious food and poor sanitation practices. The healthcare system struggles with unequal distribution of healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas, leading to limited access to quality medical services and a reliance on out-of-pocket expenditure for treatment, often pushing people into poverty when faced with major health issues. Additionally, low awareness about preventive healthcare and inadequate maternal care contribute to high maternal mortality rates.

SM Charitable Trust is helping to improve the lives of the poor by providing essential services like food, shelter, healthcare, and education, advocating for policy changes to address systemic poverty, empowering communities through skill development and training programs, facilitating access to resources like clean water and sanitation, and working at the grassroots level to understand and address specific community needs directly with the affected populations; essentially acting as a bridge between the poor and government services or other support systems.
